In 2017, I was invited to share my diabetes journey so far with a group of diabetes researchers and educators attending an international conference in Galway called the Diabetes Self-Management Alliance (DSMA for short).
Afterwards, I was invited to be part of the organizing team to be a voice for the lived experience and contribute to the content of this two day annual conference. I have to admit that during the 2018 event I really didn’t have a clue about what I was doing or how to facilitate a workshop, so I was thrilled that for the upcoming event in Stockholm, Sweden, we have enlisted the help of experts:
Tina Blichfeldt, PWD, PPI representative, Denmark,
Bastian Hauck, PWD, #dedoc° Diabetes Online Community, Germany and
Mette Due-Christensen, Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Post Doc Researcher, Diabetes Management Research Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen and King’s College London
The workshop we are doing is “The Value of Peer Support from the Perspective of People with Diabetes, Clinicians & Educators” and is something that I’m completely passionate about. Our aim is to encourage support for diabetes peer support from healthcare professionals and peer support will also feature in the plenary on our second day given by Bastian Hauck.
I haven’t attended many health professional conferences but in my limited experience, this one is very different from others: it’s completely interactive, very few “teachy-preachy” lectures, the workshops are focused on sharing AND exchanging knowledge not just from the facilitators but from all the delegates in a way that makes implementing improvements where you work doable.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear keynote lecture on 'The Patient Revolution' from Professor Victor Montori, Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. Professor Montori will also co-facilitate a workshop on 'Shared Decision Making: Process, Roles & Aids' with Professor Apostolos Tsapas from Greece.
DSMA 2020 will provide participants with the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops led by global experts in the field of Diabetes Self-Management. Workshop facilitators will include representatives from the Steno Diabetes Center, Copenhagen; Leicester Diabetes Centre, UK; NUI Galway, Ireland with facilitators also from Sweden, Norway, Australia, USA, Greece and Germany.
Workshop Themes:
Do it Yourself (DIY) Technology: Implications for Healthcare Professionals
The Value of Peer Support from the Perspective of People with Diabetes, Clinicians & Educators
